CMP searching for mass grave in Trachonas

The committee on missing persons (CMP) is searching for a mass grave in Trachonas, in north Nicosia, where it is thought Greek Cypriots were buried during the Turkish invasion in 1974.

The excavations are in the same area where 36 missing Greek Cypriots were found in two locations in 2015.

CMP member Nestoras Nestoros told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the search was taking place in a non-military area but excavations in a military zone were expected to start in the next few months.

Nestoros said the information concerns seven Greek Cypriots who were last seen in the area of Trachonas, Omorphita, and Neapoli, three Nicosia suburbs next to each other.

The CMP was also carrying out a dig in the Nicosia suburb of Strovolos in the south in search of a well that may contain the remains of Turkish Cypriots missing since the intercommunal strife in the 1960s.

The CMP is using aerial photographs taken by the British just a few days after the fighting started in 1963.

The photographs provide the experts with indications about the wells that were open at the time.

In a related development, the Turkish army has also provided aerial photographs from 1974, which will be studied in a bid to find leads concerning missing persons.

The pictures were taken before and after the invasion, in the summer of 1974. It is the first time investigators were granted access to the material.

CMP in search of third burial place in Trachonas, continues digging well in Strovolos (video)

The Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) started Thursday excavations in the Trachonas area, in the Turkish-occupied part of Nicosia, in search for a third burial place containing the remains of Greek Cypriots who went missing in 1974. Two burial places were already discovered in the wider area back in 2015.

Greek Cypriot member of the CMP, Nestoras Nestoros, told CNA that ongoing excavations in Trachonas are taking place in a non-military area, near the “central prison”, while another operation is expected to take place in the next few months, within an area designated as military zone.

The office of the Greek Cypriot member has information on seven Greek Cypriots who went missing in the areas of Trachonas, Neapolis and Omorfita, in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the Cypriot capital, Nicosia.

Back in 2015, the CMP discovered the remains of 36 missing persons in total, 20 in one area and another 16 in a second spot in Trachonas.

At the same time, the CMP continues excavating a well in Strovolos, in search for two Turkish Cypriots who went missing during the 1963-64 period. Four more crews continue digging in various sites in the Turkish-occupied part of the island.

CNA visited the excavation site in Strovolos, near the Linear Park at Pedieos river, where the CMP started working last Monday. The crew is using an excavator to dig the well, as well as other machinery to penetrate the rock and reach the bottom of the well.

The crew is assisted by aerial photography taken by the British in 1963, only a few months before the start of bi-communal clashes in Cyprus. These images provide useful information, showing the wells that were in use during the said period.

On another note, CNA learns that the Turkish army provided the office of the Turkish Cypriot member to the CMP with access to aerial photography from 1974, which could be used in the search for missing persons.

The photos were taken both before and after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, in the summer of 1974. This is the first time the office of the Turkish Cypriot member gains access to this material.

The results of this move will depend on the progress of ongoing excavations, a reliable source told CNA.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

A Committee on Missing Persons has been established, upon agreement between the leaders of the two communities, with the scope of exhuming, identifying and returning the remains of missing persons to their relatives.

The CMP is a tripartite intercommunal investigatory committee comprising a representative of the Greek Cypriot community, a representative of the Turkish Cypriot community, and a Third Member nominated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and appointed by the UN Secretary General.

Asylum seeker arrested at Kofinou after knife threat

A 51-year-old asylum seeker was transferred to Nicosia central prisons on Friday after he was arrested at the Kofinou reception centre the day before for drawing a knife on a guard of the centre.

The Larnaca district court on Friday ordered that the 51-year-old remain in the Nicosia central prisons until November 5 when the case against him will be adjudicated.

At around 7.20pm on Thursday, the 51-year-old, who was reportedly drunk at the time, drew a knife on a guard at the reception centre who was having a verbal confrontation with another asylum seeker, police said.

The guards notified the police, who went to the scene. As police attempted to arrest the 51-year-old, the latter resisted and bit a police sergeant but did not wound him.

The sergeant was taken to Larnaca general hospital A&E, where he was given a tetanus injection before being released.

Police managed to arrest the 51-year-old after a court order was issued around midnight on Thursday.

The hearing on November 5 will also deal with a second case against the suspect which concerns similar offences committed on June 1 at the Kofinou reception centre.

Puppy love: lion, tigers and hyenas reared by dog at Chinese zoo

A lion, tigers and spotted hyenas are growing up alongside Golden Retriever puppies at a Beijing zoo after being abandoned by their mothers.

The Beijing Wildlife Park put the eight cubs, including Siberian tigers, a white tiger, spotted hyenas and an African lion, to nurse with a Golden Retriever, alongside her own puppies.

Wang Shuo, an animal nursery worker at the zoo, said a white tiger cub was the first abandoned baby to get milk from the dog.

“Soon after, we had a Siberian tiger, an African lion and spotted hyenas come one after another and formed this strange combination.”

Visitors to the Beijing Wildlife Park have been enchanted by the sight of the cubs frolicking with the puppies.

“I think it’s incredible,” said Meng Ying, a 28-year-old accountant visiting the park.

“I thought if these animals lived together there would be bloody scenes but as we can see, they’re playing and growing together in harmony.”

Unemployment rate falls to 7.7% in July

By Stelios Orphanides

The unemployment rate in Cyprus fell last month to 7.7 per cent from 7.9 per cent the month before or to 34,000 persons without a job, the European Commissions’ statistical office said.

The unemployment rate among men was 7.2 per cent in July while that among women was 8.2 per cent, Eurostat said in a statement on its website on Friday. The jobless rate among youth was 22.4 per cent in April, which was the most recent available figure.

In July 2017, the unemployment rate on the island was 10.7 per cent. Last month’s unemployment rate was the lowest since July 2011, when an explosion at a naval base knocked out the main power generation plant on the island causing outages which further hurt the then struggling economy.

The unemployment rate in the EU fell slightly to 6.8 per cent last month from .9 per cent in June and in the euro area it remained unchanged at 8.2 per cent, Eurostat said.

The highest jobless rate was for yet another month in Greece with 19.5 per cent in May, down from 20 per cent in April, Eurostat said. Spain and Italy followed with 15.1 per cent and 10.4 per cent in July respectively.

The lowest unemployment rates were in the Czech Republic with 2.3 per cent, in Germany with 3.4 per cent and Poland with 3.5 per cent, Cystat said.

Residents in Paphos complain of ‘smelly water’

Scores of residents are complaining because water in Paphos and Geroskipou has an earthy taste and smell, daily Politis reported on Friday.

The water in question comes from the Asprokremmos water treatment plant.

According the paper, the low level of water in the Asprokremmos reservoir combined with high temperatures have led to the growth of algae, as shallow waters and heat tend to encourage the growth of the organisms.

Asprokremmos is one of the main water supplies to Paphos and the surrounding region.

The authorities, who were not available for comment on Friday, told Politis that despite being unpleasant, the water was not dangerous.

Tests have been carried out and there was no danger to the health of residents who consume the water, as all results are within allowed levels, they said.

Authorities, however, are trying to solve the problem by chlorination and fine-tuning the refining methods which are being used. In addition, they are increasing the amount of water from the Kannaviou reservoir to affected areas.

Paphos residents, especially farmers, have long been complaining because Paphos is the only area in Cyprus which has no desalination plant and relies solely on dams for its water supply, both for residential and farming use.

A mobile desalination unit had been installed in 2010 but was dismantled in 2016 after it was deemed not cost-effective.

The new plant to be built in Kouklia was approved by the council of ministers last year. It will be in the same location where the mobile plant was and is going to have a daily capacity of 15,000 cubic metres.

The unit is expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2020.

EU, Britain talk up chances of autumn Brexit deal

EU and UK negotiators on Friday talked up prospects of agreeing a Brexit deal this autumn, citing recent progress in detailing very close security cooperation to take effect after Britain leaves the bloc.

The European Union’s Michel Barnier said it was “possible” to get an agreement in time for a summit of all the bloc’s leaders in Brussels on Oct. 18-19, though added a delay into November was also possible .

After his latest talks with Barnier, Brexit minister Dominic Raab said he was “stubbornly optimistic” and “as confident as before, if not more” that there would be a deal.

The two said they made progress over security cooperation, including on exchanging data.

“Europe’s security is the United Kingdom’s security,” Raab told a joint news conference.

Barnier said unresolved issues included geographical indications, the role of the EU’s top court in policing the agreement, Euratom cooperation and data protection, among others.

Christodoulides, Hunt express hope for quick resumption of Cyprus peace talks

Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides and UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt expressed hope that the “mission of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Cyprus Ms Lutte will lead to positive results and, more specifically, to the  quick resumption of talks since they were interrupted at Crans -Montana”, during their meeting on the sidelines of Gymnich in Vienna.

Christodoulides met with his British counterpart and discussed the current state of affairs on the Cyprus issue  and the prospects of reopening the talks.

They also exchanged views on the negotiations on Brexit, recognizing the importance (despite the difficulties encountered) of a short conclusion regarding the Retirement Agreement.

The two countries’ common approach to the need for a strong EU-UK relationship in the post Brexit era and the need to fully safeguard the rights of those residing and working within the UK bases was reaffirmed during their meeting.

As for the discussions in Gymnich itself (the bi-annual informal meeting of EU foreign ministers), Christodoulides intervened during a debate on the Middle East and after highlighting the EU’s multifaceted importance, he stressed the need to develop a more targeted EU engagement in the Middle East, building on the Union`s neighbourhood in this direction.

In this context, the Foreign Minister referred to the excellent relations of Cyprus with all the countries of the region and the tripartite cooperation mechanisms developed jointly with Greece, expressing at the same time Nicosia`s readiness to work, and on behalf of Brussels , for a more direct and effective engagement of the EU with the states of the region.

Finally, with regard to Transatlantic Relations, Christodoulides referred to common challenges that require enhanced cooperation between the EU and the United States, and noted the need for a continuous and honest dialogue, with full respect for possible different approaches.

More light shed on old co-op irregularities

The co-op inherited irregularities, such as loans granted on the basis of inflated collateral, loans given without due diligence and others given with churches and cemeteries as collateral, the committee of inquiry set up to probe the collapse of the Cyprus Co-operative Bank head on Friday.

One of the examples cited by current CCB board member Yiorgos Kittos was the granting of a loan to a 90 year old woman with a 40 year repayment period.

Kittos, who has been a member of the board since 2013, said that they had nevertheless managed to make it into a competitive bank The audit committee had taken action against irregularities, launching disciplinary action and taking legal action, he added.

He also spoke of inexorable pressure from supervisors

“After we were organised as a bank we did not have serious irregularities, we became a commercial bank, we cleaned out the dirt but unfortunately the supervisors led us to where they led us.”

He added that the tough scenarios imposed by supervisors had pushed up the NPLs  index — for example an NPL which was seven or eight years in arrears was booked as having zero value, even though there was property as collateral.

“We ended up being pressed to increase provisions by €800m and that is why we had this specific outcome for the CCB.,” he said.

Man in hot water over false beating statement

A 48-year-old could be in hot water after he had falsely claimed he was beaten by Turkish Cypriots at the village of Agridia in Limassol some 10 days ago.

Limassol police spokesman Ioannis Soteriadis told the Cyprus Mail that the man has given a new statement with a different version of the August 21 events.

“He was not beaten, and has already given a new statement with a different version of events,” the spokesman said. “It is now up to the attorney-general to decide how the case will proceed based on the new information given by the 48-year-old.”

The spokesman said: “there is a possibility that the 48-year-old will be charged for giving a false statement.”

Based on his initial account, police detained three Turkish Cypriots and a Romanian man who have been released.

The 48-year-old had claimed that he had been beaten after he spotted four men in a car with Turkish Cypriot number plates driving past his orchard and confronted them on suspicion of potential theft.

He said it was followed by an altercation during which the men wrested a crowbar he was holding and beat him with it.

Despite his claims, medical tests, including a CT scan, found that he had no serious internal or external injuries.

The suspects also denied his claims, saying they did not even get into a fight with the man.

They told police they were working on a construction site in the area and they had driven by the area and had also waved but there was no fight. Their account was verified by police.

In his new statement, the 48-year-old insists that he was beaten by four men, just not the ones the police arrested.

According to the new version of events, police said, the 48-year-old saw a group of four men descending a mountain slope on foot as he was driving in his car at a 10-minute distance from his orchard on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 21.

He said that he found their presence suspicious since there had been thefts in the past from his and other people’s orchards.

He asked the four men to stop and asked them what they were doing in that area and if they are thieves, but he received no answer.

He then chased them with a crowbar, which caused the four men to flee, but, according to the 48-year-old’s account, after running a distance of 100 meters, they turned around and ran towards him.

When he approached them, one of the men took him by the shirt and another took the crowbar from his hands, hitting him once on the head. He managed to get hold of the crowbar again, but it was once more taken out of his hands after which he received another blow to the nose.

In his statement, the 48-year-old said that in addition to this incident, he had also reported the car with Turkish Cypriot number plates on suspicion of possible theft, since cabbage and beans had recently been stolen from his orchard, while the area had also recently seen fires started by arsonists.
