Human bones found in Chlorakas

Human bones have been found in the coastal area of Chlorakas and police and the Department of Antiquities are carrying out intensive investigations, Philenews reported on Monday.

It said that the bones were found two days ago by a British resident who was walking his dog near where a stream reaches the sea in the Dimma area of Chlorakas.

He immediately notified the police who went to the scene accompanied by a state pathologist and an archaeologist from the Antiquities Department and confirmed they were human bones. First indications are that they belong to two individuals, but it is unknown whether they belong to a man or a woman.

Investigations on site are continuing, while the bones will be sent to the lab in Nicosia for specialised studies.

Philenews said police are investigating the possibility the bones may belong to one or two individuals who have been missing for years, the possibility they may have been washed up from the sea or to have been carried there from the rushing torrents of the past few days of heavy rain.

Pissouri residents complain about land fissures (pictures)

A slow-moving landslide which has caused damage to the soil and houses is affecting the area “Limnes” in Pissouri, as the village is located in a geologically problematic zone, philenews reports.

Pissouri residents have been raising the problem since 2012, when a land slippage first appeared in the village.

Since then, many houses have sustained enormous damage. Georgia-Elina Zoi, lawyer of the Pissouri Housing Initiative Group (PHIG) cited the example of one house which has moved a full metre from its place.

Four families have had to leave their homes, without receiving compensation, as insurers in Cyprus do not cover landslides and it is the government which is responsible for paying compensation for damage from natural disasters.

“The government should stop pretending that it is the fault of the studies and admit that there is a landslide, to compensate those who have sustained damage and to issue title deeds,” she said.

Which people are affected?

According to Zoi, Limnes is mainly inhabited by British and British-Cypriot pensioners, as well as young families.

Zoi says that Limnes residents who are not Cypriot citizens have no property back home and no access to the local banking system, in order to receive loans. “If they lose their property they will lose everything,” she said. Others, have taken out loans to build their houses and are now paying mortgages for houses that are collapsing.

“The government is waiting for the residents to leave or die. It is unacceptable for a state to not take care of its citizens and to expect from them to respond to natural disasters on their own,” Zoi said.

In September, the issue caught the attention of the BBC which highlighted the plight of British families whose homes have been ripped apart.

BBC One’s Inside Out South programme interviewed couples who said they had been abandoned by the government. Zoi told Radio Active that the state is dragging its feet, refusing to pay compensation.

“This is all we have. This was our dream home,” a tearful Katherine Yeomans told the programme. “We can’t go back to the UK because we have nothing there. We have no property there.”

Affected area is 500 thousand square metres and increasing

PHIG has obtained studies from experts and satellite imaging, at a cost of 25,000 euros, which measures the movement of the land. According to the study, the movement is up to 40 cm per year.

“We have proven the existence of an active slow-moving landslide, which is a natural disaster. The affected area measures around 500 thousand square metres and is increasing. The Republic of Cyprus should contact the competent bodies of the European Union and request financial assistance through European funds for natural disasters,” Zoi argued.

According to Zoi, all studies agree that a major factor in activating the phenomenon is the accumulation of large quantities of water in the subsoil, which comes from two sources: rain water and sewage water.

Lack of appropriate infrastructure has led to the accumulation of large quantities of water and the destabilisation of the soil, causing the slow-moving landslide phenomenon, the speed of which, however, has more than tripled in 2018, due to increased rainfall, Zoi says.

No evacuation plan

According to Zoi, state authorities have no evacuation plan for a case of natural disaster in the area.

The community and the Limassol District Administration are trying to open new roads through dirt fields as current roads are retreating and holes opening up. People are concerned that these roads, which could provide an escape route in case of danger, will turn into mud and trap cars, as has happened in the past, Zoi said.

“There is no plan to evacuate the area, or a plan to relocate or even temporarily house the residents in the event of a natural disaster. We worry that residents will get trapped in their homes without water and electricity if the winter continues like this. Most of last week the water was cut, while the electricity authority was replacing and expanding cables, trying to improve power supply,” Zoi said.

Proposed solutions

The Technical Chamber said that after it was informed about situation in 2015 it had sought and obtained information from the Interior Ministry as to what was to blame for the problem.

The Interior Ministry study included a proposal for constructing a pipeline network for groundwater monitoring as wells as pumps for the extraction of excess water. The cost of this system has been estimated at €20 million, but it has remained on paper.

In October 2017, the Interior Ministry announced that it will conduct a competition to study the problem and propose solutions.

Residents say that a new study will be conducted by the company that will win the competition. Then, the state will examine the study and decide whether it wants to adopt the proposed solution or to relocate the affected citizens. A process that might take many years.

The main request of the PHIG is the immediate relocation of the residents whose homes are on rift lines.

Meghan Markle’s father appeals to Queen Elizabeth to get his daughter back in touch

Meghan Markle’s father directly appealed to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on Monday to intercede and end his estrangement from his daughter, the wife of Prince Harry.

Former U.S. actress Meghan, now the Duchess of Sussex, married Harry, the queen’s grandson and sixth-in-line to the throne, in a glittering ceremony at Windsor Castle in May.

But the immediate build-up to the wedding was overshadowed by her father, Thomas, a former lighting director for U.S. TV soaps and sitcoms, who pulled out days beforehand after undergoing heart surgery.

Meghan’s father said he had not had contact with his daughter for months and repeated text messages to Meghan had gone unanswered.

When asked what message he had for Queen Elizabeth, 92, Thomas Markle said: “I would appreciate anything she can do and I would think that she would want to resolve the family problems.”

“All families, royal or otherwise, are the same and they should all be together certainly around the holidays,” Markle added.

Markle said that Meghan, 37, had not sent him a Christmas card but that he was hopeful that they could at some time build their relationship.

“Please reach out to me,” he said of Meghan. “I love my daughter very much and she has to know that… Just send me a text.”

“All I can say is that I’m here she knows it and I’ve reached out to her and I need her to reach back to me. I love her very much,” Markle said. “This can’t continue forever.”

Harry, 34, and Meghan are expecting their first child in the spring of 2019.

“I am certainly hoping that everything goes well and that they produce a beautiful baby and I’ll get to see a little Meghan or a little Harry – that would be very nice and I look forward to that happening,” Markle said.

“I think she’ll make a great Mom.”

Markle dismissed reports that Meghan could at times be rude. She was, he said, very polite as she had been raised on Hollywood stages.

When asked if she was a social climber, her father said: “She’s always been a very controlling person and that’s part of her nature but she has never been rude.”

Kensington Palace did not immediately comment on the interview.

Cyprus, Greece and Israel welcome cooperation with like-minded countries, Israeli ambassador says

The partnership between Cyprus, Greece and Israel is not exclusive and the three countries welcome cooperation with other like-minded parties to promote the goals of stability, security and prosperity, Ambassador of Israel to Cyprus, Shmuel Revel, told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), in an interview ahead of the next trilateral Summit on December 20, in Beersheba.

Revel said energy presented a potential for joint ventures and projects, and for economic growth in the area, expressing the belief that the EastMed pipeline project “represents a viable and strategic option of common interest to our countries, as well as to other European states.”

Asked about Turkey’s position and threats against drilling operations in Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone, he underlined that Israel opposes any action in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea which could cause a issue of stability, violate international law or contradict good neighbourly relations.

Cypriot–Israeli relations during the past year had reached an unprecedented higher level. “We look forward to further upgrading them in 2019,” he said.

Referring to the summit, Revel said it would focus on cooperation in innovation, cyber and research.  In parallel, he added, the Israeli foreign ministry was organising a seminar for young entrepreneurs from Cyprus and Greece. This first of a kind trilateral seminar, titled: “Innovation Road map: How to Scale Up Your Start-Up”, includes eleven participants from Cyprus and a similar number of participants from Greece, he added.

Referring to the trilateral cooperation, the ambassador stressed that “promoting stability, security and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider region was the major objective. “We share significant opportunities, particularly in the fields of energy and tourism,” he added.

At the same time, Revel noted, “we face important challenges. Together with like-minded countries we must face the growing threats of terrorism and extremism.”

“Based on our common values of democracy, the trilateral partnership also rises up to respond to emergency situations. Civil defence and medical services of the three countries are working closely together to save lives. For the future of the region it is imperative that we increase our capabilities in the areas of water and environmental protection.”

Asked about the EastMed project’s importance for the region and the EU and the drilling operations in Cyprus’ EEZ, the ambassador said the significant gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean were a major opportunity.

“Energy presents the potential for joint ventures and projects, and for economic growth. We believe that the EastMed pipeline project represents a viable and strategic option of common interest to our countries, as well as to other European states,” he added.

Philippines wins fourth Miss Universe crown

Catriona Gray from the Philippines was crowned Miss Universe on Monday, the fourth time the Southeast Asian country has won the international beauty pageant.

Gray, a 24-year-old Filipino-Australian model, won the title in the Thai capital Bangkok where the pageant included for the first time a transgender contestant.

“My heart is filled with so much gratitude. There were moments of doubt where I felt overwhelmed and I felt the pressure,” said Gray, who wore a red and orange dress that was inspired by Mount Mayon, a volcano that erupted this year.

Gray was asked during the contest about her views on legalising marijuana and replied that she supported it for medical uses.

After she was crowned, Gray told reporters the question was “definitely relevant” and “an active topic”, in an apparent reference to the war on drugs in the Philippines that has killed thousands of Filipinos and caused international alarm.

Gray said during the pageant that working in a Manila slum had taught her to find beauty in difficult situations.

“If I could teach people to be grateful, we could have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster, and children would have a smile on their face,” she said.

Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, 24 was the first runner-up, followed by Miss Venezuela, Sthefany Gutiérrez, 19.

Miss Spain, Angela Ponce, 27, made history as the first transgender contestant in the 66-year-old pageant.

Gray is the fourth Filipina to win Miss Universe and the second in three years. The pageant was shown live on the country’s biggest television network and dominated social media.

Salvador Panelo, spokesman for President Rodrigo Duterte, said her win would put the country on the world map for its “beauty and elegance.”

“In her success, Miss Philippines has shown to the world that women in our country have the ability to turn dreams into reality through passion, diligence, determination and hard work,” he said.

The Philippines previously won Miss Universe titles in 2015, 1973 and 1969.

Blast smashes windows at Greece’s SKAI TV; no injuries

A device exploded near the SKAI TV building in the Greek capital early on Monday, smashing windows on six floors and causing extensive damage to the interior but no injuries.

SKAI is one of Greece’s biggest TV stations and part of a media group which includes a radio station and is affiliated with Greece’s major daily newspaper, Kathimerini.

Police said a makeshift explosive device went off near the SKAI building at 2:35 a.m. following warning calls to two media outlets. On its website, the station said windows were smashed from the first to the sixth floors.

“The material damage is big on almost all floors, with the biggest seen on the third and fourth floors, where employees’ offices are located,” it said. “The picture is disheartening. Suspended ceilings collapsed to the floor, glass windows broke to pieces.”

Small-scale attacks on businesses, state buildings, police and politicians are not uncommon in Greece, which has a long history of political violence.

Speaking to SKAI from the scene, Greece’s Citizens’ Protection Minister Olga Gerovassili said the attack had targeted democracy.

“Democracy, however, is shielded and of course not threatened,” she said.

Journalists presenting SKAI’s morning show were broadcasting live outside the station.

Its police correspondent said the device was estimated to contain about 5 kg of explosive materials and placed in a narrow alleyway close to the building.

Footage from inside showed windows blown out with glass strewn across offices.

Cloud of despair weighs heavy on Pissouri home owners

By Bejay Browne

For more than three years, the Sunday Mail has been reporting on the plight of homeowners on the Limnes estate in Pissouri who have seen their homes crumbling away as the result of a land slippage that first appeared in 2012.

Many properties – houses and apartments – have all been seriously affected. Some of them look like a bomb site, and include the total destruction of homes and gardens. Homes are split apart, walls are bowed, roofs collapsed and gardens and pools destroyed. Roads have buckled. Fissures in the land continue to appear all over the area. The affected area measures around 500 thousand square metres and is increasing. Four families have had to be evicted from their homes.

Despite promises over the years, the authorities have done nothing.

At issue is, of course, responsibility for the destruction and thus the cost.

Does it lie with the developers who started building in the area in the 1980s? Were adequate surveys on the suitability of the land for building purposes carried out? Should the authorities ever have green-lighted building there?

Even if the developers were responsible, the construction happened so long ago, they are now either retired or dead.

Or, is the land slippage a natural disaster that simply could not have been predicted? In which case should the government declare it as such and – as insurers of last resort – help the affected people find a place to live, equal to the ones they have lost?

In 2015, some of the property owners came together to form the Pissouri Housing Initiative Group (PHIG).

PHIG has paid out thousands of euros to obtain studies and papers from various renowned international experts and also satellite imaging, at a cost of 25,000 euros, which measures the movement of the land. According to the study, the movement is up to 40 cm per year, which is a lot when it’s pressing against a house.

What is clear is that month by month, the homes continue to disintegrate and stuck in the middle of the blame game over responsibility and therefore restitution are the residents whose lives have been destroyed.

Some of them are elderly, some have experienced a range of stress-related illnesses, including heart problems. All of them have suffered many sleepless nights. All of them feel trapped.

One of the evicted homes has even been looted, thieves taking what few remaining items owners had left in the property until they could find space for them elsewhere.

Affected residents say they feel alienated and ostracised by some unsympathetic members of the community who say that highlighting their plight in the media has decreased the value of their own, unaffected homes.

Below, three Limnes residents describe how their lives have been shattered.

Debbie Evans, 49, from Wales is a mother of two and has lived in Cyprus since 2005 Debbie’s family bought ‘a lovely detached villa with a pool and garden’ in 2005 and paid around 200,000 Cyprus pounds (341,720 euros). There were no title deeds and they are still waiting, which is another problem.

They are one of the more recent families to be affected by the landslip and first noticed cracks in the patio last year. In the 15 months since, cracks have appeared in the house and the outside ‘has completely gone’.

My husband and I chose to move to Pissouri because other family members live here. Before we moved we had regularly visited for holidays and just fell in love with the village.

We moved here for a better way of life, the children grew up here and speak Greek. They were five and eight when we came out and they went to the local schools. We integrated into the village and felt a part of it.

Now we feel completely alienated, nobody wants to know. They treat us like ‘Oh, they are only expats, they don’t matter.’ That’s the feeling you get. ‘They’re British they can afford it.’ But the fact is we’ve got a mortgage on the property. It’s the only property we’ve got. Like thousands of families, that was our nest egg. When the kids go, you downscale and that goes in the bank to help you. It’s now valueless, the house is worth nothing.

he Fields’ home before the damage started

Not only have I got to continue working. I’ve got nothing to leave my kids. That hurts more than anything. I can fight and work on, but I can’t leave my boys anything. I just haven’t got it.

In August 2017 we were getting the house ready for visitors and we noticed a crack in the tiles on our patio outside and my husband filled them in. We didn’t think anything of it.

A couple of weeks later, we realised that the cracks were back and that other ones had appeared.

A large field separates my friend’s house from mine and she had cracks too.

When we looked we found a fissure that goes under my house, across the field and hits my friend’s house, goes under hers and carries on down the road.

When we realised that she had problem too, we started panicking. Also a gentleman across the road put up a retaining wall and the work shook the land that was weak already. We have been back and forth to Limassol district council ourselves. They don’t want to know.

So far our house is not too bad, although cracks are now appearing inside. It’s the outside that’s all completely gone.

The pool has had to be filled in, we had to remove the pergola, the corner of the plot is going. The pool was so close to the house and you could see into the 60ft gap between the pool and the house foundations. It was scary.

The government don’t even pretend to be interested. It’s been terrible, really hard. It’s put so much pressure on us as a family. We have been fighting and arguing more, the stress levels are so high. My boys are 22 and 19 years old now. It’s a nightmare.

The insurance companies don’t want to know of course. They don’t cover a landslip, and they can’t wait to tell you that. So the government has to be the insurer of last resort. It’s not our fault, we bought our house in good faith and had our surveys done. The bank will have done their bit too as we have a mortgage, and it was all done properly.

Cracks have also been reported as appearing at the village amphitheatre nearby.

At what point will they wake up and realise that they are going to lose the entire village? It’s not just a couple of Brits moaning about a couple of cracks in their properties. It’s really serious.

I don’t feel the same as I did before, I don’t sleep, only cat nap. It’s always there. You get up in the morning and open the curtains and there’s a mound of earth where the pool used to be.

You try and switch off, if you didn’t to some degree, it would kill you. But it is so much harder to be joyful and it magnifies other problems.

The Fields’ house now

Retirees Kayt and her husband Peter Field, an 80-year-old former British army colonel, were one of several couples that appeared on the recent BBC programme ‘Inside Out South’ which highlighted the residents’ plight.

The Fields purchased their four-bedroom villa with a ‘fabulous’ garden and pool in 1993, and spent an ‘awful lot of money’ on the property before deciding to retire to Cyprus in 2003, a country they fell in love with when Peter was stationed on the island. Their house was built in 1987 and had no problems before.

It now looks like a bomb site. After being evicted, the pensioners are now having to rent a property nearby and watch their much-loved home continue to disintegrate.

Kayt explains what they’ve been through since they first experienced problems in 2011.

All our money is tied up in this house. We bought it from the owner. We got our title deeds. This was our retirement dream; we’ve spent more years in Cyprus than anywhere else. We knew Pissouri well, had a lot of good friends and loved the village.

We first saw a broken water pipe outside our house in 2011. This could have been something to do with the landslide. Water poured right through our house. It was awful, but we didn’t realise what it could mean or what was to come.

Then, around two years later, a huge sinkhole appeared in our front garden. It was just something strange that happened but we didn’t discuss it with our neighbours.

It was not until 2015 when we went away and came back two weeks later and could see many cracks appearing in the walls that we talked to our neighbours.

Their house had problems inside, like a pistol shot going off and then part of a large archway in their sitting room completely broke away. Then we started getting ‘pistol shots’.

The insurance company completely walked away and said it was obviously a landslide. The insurance rep who came to our home had the audacity to smile at me as he told me that they wouldn’t give us any money. I’m sorry to say I lost it.

After this, many more cracks started to appear. Emotionally it’s just killed us. We were both in hospital this year because of it – it’s total stress all the time. You wake up in the morning with a big heavy cloud over your head and think, ‘Oh no, we have to pay all this rent because we can’t live in our own house.’ And yet we’re so very close to our own home. We go down there and I’ve only just stopped bursting into tears when I see it, but it really is awful.

We got most of our furniture and personal items out in time, but our rented house is far smaller and so we left some items at home. Anything left has since been stolen. The gates to the property are locked but thieves climbed over them to enter. We had so much taken by looters. They have been taking our things since we moved out, garden tools, little bits and pieces from family, like a beer pump, they also took fishing rods and sports equipment.

We didn’t budget for having to rent a house and so we are unable to do a lot of things we used to do.

The authorities have made us feel abandoned. We can’t get to them. We would like to meet the minister of the interior and the president. We would like them to come and see exactly the state of our houses and what is happening to the area. You can’t possibly visualise what it’s like unless you see it. They just put us off. They are not interested. Yet, this is a European country and Europe has a disaster fund.

For husband Peter the lack of empathy from some people has been particularly hurtful.

A lot of people in a smallish village just don’t want to know about it and don’t care. We have been alienated by many people really. Some have said that we are lowering the value of property which is absurd and very hurtful, although it has brought a few of us closer together

I don’t think a day goes by when we don’t see something that reminds us that we don’t have a house anymore. You can see a TV show, people go home. We can’t. Our house is worth nothing. Before all this, we had a lovely time here and we love Cyprus.

I feel incredibly let down. I would ask the people that make decisions how would they like to go to their families and say ‘through no fault of my own, we have lost our home and the terrible thing is that no-one cares about it.’

One or two of us have been told expatriates are not going to get any compensation. That is also very hurtful and it’s against the law.

I have a mixed bag of emotions and helplessness is one of them.

There is a real need for those in authority to demonstrate some empathy for those losing their houses or facing eviction. It is the end of a dream, damage is uninsurable, houses are valueless. Being retired as many are means we can’t generate funds to replace our homes. Children and grandchildren can no longer easily visit. So much of what we all worked very hard for has been lost.
