UN’s ‘sustainable development guru’ to visit Cyprus

Share this:

Jeffrey Sachs, the UN Secretary-General’s Adviser on sustainable development, is expected to visit Cyprus to promote the international initiative that the Republic of Cyprus will undertake on climate change.

In a written statement, government spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said that following the initiative announced by President Nicos Anastasiades during the international conference on climate change organised by the Cyprus Institute, the president contacted Sachs.

Based on the special interest in the region, Sachs discussed with the president the proposal that Anastasiades has already submitted for Cyprus to undertake an active role in coordinating efforts to handle climate change. This role will be promoted in the framework of regional cooperation relations that are developing.

Sachs, the statement added, has accepted the president’s proposal and will be visiting Cyprus in early 2019.

The 64-year-old Sachs, an economist by trade, has previously stated that the “state is by nature clearly prior to the family and to the individual, since the whole is of necessity prior to the part.”

Sachs has proclaimed that the United Nations must “dictate the course of nations and individual rights must be sacrificed for the greater good.”

In his book ‘The End of Poverty’, he advocates extracting more than $845bn from the American people through global taxation in order to finance what he calls “Sustainable Development Goals,” as envisioned by a Sustainable Development Solutions Network run by himself.
